How I Spent 2 Days and 2 Nights in Coron, Palawan for only 6,000 pesos!

Friday, January 11, 2019

Even though I have a long list of places that I want to visit, I still have several beautiful places in mind that I want to go back to again and again. One of them is Coron. This island has a special place in my heart because it was where my mother and I traveled for the first time together back in 2014. So when my bloggers friends invited to go on a 2D/1N trip to Coron, I did not hesitate. I said yes right away!

Note: I have created this travel guide to make things a little easier for anyone who will visit Coron, Palawan for the first time. I know how travel planning can be a bit daunting, so I truly hope you find this helpful. Feel free to comment down below if you have questions!

How to get to Coron
Option #1 (Manila/Clark/Cebu to Coron by Air)
The fastest way to get to Coron is by air, with frequent daily departures from Manila, Clark or Cebu all year round. Seat sales range from 900 pesos to 1,600 pesos roundtrip. Regular airfare range from 3,000 pesos to 6,000 pesos roundtrip depending on your departure point.

Option #2 (Manila to Coron by Sea) – This is what we chose on our recent visit
Another way to get to Coron is by sea via 2Go Travel, with only 1 trip every week (going to Coron is every Friday night while going back to Manila is every Sunday night). This is perfect for a 2D2N itinerary. Seat sales range from 800 pesos to 1,500 pesos roundtrip for Super Value and Mega Value Class. Regular airfare range from 2,500 pesos to 5,000 pesos roundtrip for Super Value and Mega Value Class.

Where to stay in Coron on a budget
Coron is one of the Philippines’ most popular islands thus there are plenty of accommodation options. If you are travelling during the peak season (March to June), make sure to book your accommodation ahead of time as demand is really high. If you’re keen to save some cash consider visiting Coron during the low season (July to September). You’ll surely find the cheapest accommodations or the best bang for your buck during these months, but perhaps not the best weather.

For a great budget accommodation option, check out Mountain View Garden Inn on Tapyas Road. The property is just a 10-minute walk from the town proper, has an inviting swimming pool, and offers a great panoramic view of Coron Bay.

What to do and what to see in Coron
It’s no secret: everyone goes to Coron to see the picturesque Karst rock formations and stunning lagoons. A short trip will always include an island hopping but I also suggest venturing out and exploring other attractions like the Calauit Island Sanctuary and my new favorite Black Island. Coron is also known for Maquinit Hot Spring, so treat yourself to an afternoon of pampering.

How much do I need to enjoy Coron
Travelling in Coron is relatively cheap if you do it DIY-style or backpacker-style. On my recent visit, I only spent 5,000 pesos in Coron for a 2D/2N stay. Of course, it is definitely possible to travel much cheaper than that if you really push it by cooking your own food or bringing some pantawid-gutom (literal English translation is something to cross the hunger) from home. Some Filipino travelers do this technique to lessen their travel expenses.

*please note Manila to Coron fare is not yet included in the budget and actual expenses below. 2Go Travel fare and Cebu Pacific Airfare could go as low as 900 pesos round trip, so make sure to check for seat sales from time to time.
