Ramen Series 2: Pot Belly Ramen at Hanamaruken Ramen

Friday, August 21, 2015

Yesterday, I went to Trinoma to get a quick ramen fix just because it was raining all day. I was thinking of going to Ramen Nagi, my favourite Ramen restaurant, but I decided to try Hanamaruken Ramen for a change. It was around 4 PM when I reached Hanamaruken and there were about 7 customers at that time. Perfect because that only means they could serve the Ramen quickly! ^_^

Firm Noodles. Flavorful broth. Heat. Spice. Perfectly cooked pork. That’s what I’ve been anticipating.

As soon as I sat down, the waitress gave the menu and took my orders. There were no Omotenashi sheets like in Ramen Nagi so I was quite apprehensive. I was worried how the noodles would turn out because I like my noodles hard or extra hard. I was used to customizing my own Ramen :( I don’t really know if Hanamaruken allows customers to request the richness of the broth or softness of the noodles. Too bad I did not ask. Tsk.

Anyhow, I did not order the Signature Happiness Ramen (PHP 480), the Hanamaruken specialty, because it comes with a humongous piece of braised pork rib which I think I could not entirely consume. So then I ordered the Pot Belly Ramen (PHP 380) and Aji Tamago (PHP 50). According to the menu, the noodles is Hakata style and the broth is shoyu and tonkatsu based.

After 10 minutes, my big bad ass bowl of Ramen arrived. The broth was pretty good as it does not look too rich and watery. It is balanced nicely with a beautiful sheen of fat and collagen on top which makes it really tasty. The noodles were okay, not sure if they were hand made but were still pretty firm and chewy. The pork belly pieces were generously cut and flavour was divine! And I almost squeal when I saw the fishcake which Hanamaruken calls Narutomaki (I am a huge fan of Naruto BTW ^^ ).

The only thing I did not like is the noodles because I prefer thin hakata style. Overall, my first Ramen experience in Hanamaruken was good. I will come back for sure to try the Spicy Tobanjan Ramen (PHP 300), Salary Man Ramen (PHP 280) and the signature rice dish.
