Paradise on a Budget: Batanes 5,000 php Challenge

Friday, October 03, 2014

Contrary to what most people know, Batanes can be a cheap tourist destination. Sure traveling to the northernmost part of the Philippines can be expensive, but if you are always on 'abangers' mode then you'll be ahead of the game!

So how did we do it?

1. AIRFARE
Airfare is undoubtebly the biggest chunk of your Batanes vacation budget, ergo grabbing a deal on your flight is the most crucial step. A regular priced round trip ticket to Batanes would cost anywhere from 10,000 to 18,000 php. PAL runs seat sales regularly so when a promo pops online, grab it. *Tip* You should lookout for their Monday Madness seat sales

It was October last year when I scored a cheap airfare to Batanes through Philippine Airlines for only 1,300 php all in! Yes that's a round trip airfare already :)

THIS.
2. Accommodation
Finding appropriate accommodation is quite tricky in Batanes. There are not so much to choose from to be honest. Guesthouses are a great wallet-friendly option for groups of all sizes. We stayed at Crisan Lodge which is a four bedroom guesthouse located near the airport. The rate per room ranges from 400 php (fan room) and 1,500 php (aircon room). Depending on the number of people checking in, they can also charge on a per person basis. The best thing about Crisan Lodge is that they have a grocery store just downstairs. They have a kitchen as well which you can use to cook your own meals. For snacks, they also have an honesty store outside the rooms. Brilliant right? :)

3. DIY vs Package Tours
I am a DIY traveler so I don't usually welcome the idea of package tours. However, in Batanes, public transportation is not so convenient. Tricycles do not roam the streets to get passengers. You have to call or text to use their service (BATODA contact number: 0929-703-8404). Since we are a group of 5, we decided to avail a tour of Crisan Lodge and hire a tour guide (Hello Kuya Kinoy! ^_^). The total cost is a looott cheaper since it was divided into 5. For 1-2 pax, it would be cheaper to join other tour groups for North Batan and South Batan tour. In Sabtang island, a cheaper alternative is to hire a cogon roofed tricycle.

4. Budget
This budget breakdown is based on our 4D3N trip to Batanes, which I believe is enough to see the highlights of the province. For the shopping expenses, as you can see, I only spent 100 php for fridge magnets. Good thing, Batanes is not that commercialized compared to other tourist destinations in the Philippines, because most of the time souvenir shops can really suck out every penny out of your pockets. Another thing is that the number of people traveling affects the total cost so if you are a solo traveler, I highly recommend joining a tour group.
Still jaw-dropping even under the grey skies
So there you have it! Seatsale abangers na kayo! Who knows PAL might announce another seat sale to Batanes this month :)
